After his wife’s funeral, Artyom brought home a young girl.
“This is Elya. She will be your new mother,” he said.
– Dad… Are you serious? Are you nuts? How could you do this to me and Mom?
– Son, how can you say that? I am not a traitor or a murderer, as you probably think. Life just continue.
– Life? You didn’t even wait for the earth to settle on her coffin! Maybe you were the customer too? Look how quickly the space became available!
– Denis! – Artem raised his voice sharply. – The police found the murderer. Why are you saying this?
– And I’ll look for the customer. I’ll get my certificate – I’ll go to law school, and then I’ll see this case through to the end. And you’ll pay for everything.
– What’s wrong with you?
– I’m grieving for your mother too. But we can’t stand still. I’ve had a relationship with Elya for a long time.
– She is a stranger to me. And let her live anywhere, but not here. I don’t want to see this crow that came to peck at my family.
“Get out of the room, Denis,” his father said loudly.
Denis didn’t argue any more.
– Artyom, I told you – it was too early to bring me here. You failed with Denis. He will never accept me. It would have been better if you sent him to your parents.
“No,” Artyom answered decisively.
“We will live together. All three of us. Over time, you will get used to each other. This is not up for discussion.”
Four years passed, and Eleanor thought about having a child more and more often.
She wanted the sound of children’s laughter to re-emerge in the house. But nothing happened for her and Artyom.
“Elka, let’s wait,” her husband urged. “We have everything ahead of us. We are healthy, we just need time.”
But Eleanor did not believe in “time”. She told her friend about her fears.
“Then take a child from someone else,” she suggested without a shadow of surprise.
“For example, from Stas, my common-law husband. Handsome, healthy, gym – everything is fine.”
– But Artyom can do a test and remove both out.
– Then think for yourself. Just don’t delay – while you’re young and beautiful, you have an opportunity to stay close.
Eleanor thought about it. She took her own plans.
That evening Eleonora was waiting for her husband at home, but he unpredictedly called and said that he had to urgently leave for the distant Moscow region.
Denis showed up late. Eleanor also went upstairs. She waited for a moment, but then quietly entered. Seeing Denis in the shower, the woman slowly approached him from behind and put her arms around his shoulders. H
At that moment, he was not thinking about anything: not about skinship, not about the consequences.
The morning started with silence and the realization of what had occured. They woke up in his bed.
“What will happen now?” Eleanor muttered.
“Nothing has changed,” Denis answered coldly.
“You wanted it, I didn’t refuse. As a stepmother, you are indifferent to me, but as a woman, you are attractive. But nothing more. I have a girlfriend, we just haven’t gotten to that point yet. If you want it again, knock on the door. But for now, go home. I don’t need problems with my father right now.”
When her husband was away on business for a long time, they continued to meet.
Eleonora became pregnant.
– Most likely, yes. After so much time – and just like that… – he paused for a moment. – And what are you going to do?
– I’ll tell Artyom. He won’t check, right?
– Maybe he won’t. And if he does decide, then you’ll have problems.
– That won’t happen. We’ve had him examined, he’s sure he’s healthy. He’ll think it’s just a coincidence.
Eleanor listened.
“What should I do now?” she whispered.
– I think you should have an abortion. I won’t advise you anything else. And I don’t want you myself. Not as a wife, not as a stepmother.
“No,” she said firmly.
“I’ll give birth. And I’ll tell Artyom the truth. The children are yours, but he’ll never know. He won’t dare throw me out.
“It’s your business,” Denis shrugged.
“And I’m not going to marry you. And I won’t protect you either. You’re a liar and an adventurer. If you give birth, let it be on your conscience. Just don’t hope that my father will ever acknowledge these children as his own.”
When Artyom comes back home, she will tell him everything. Let it be what it will be.
But fate directed otherwise.
The next day she received a call from the police:
– Your husband has been arrested. In connection with the murder of your mother-in-law. He was found guilty. He also pointed out the person who ordered the murder – it turned out to be Artem.
So Artem ended up behind bars, and Eleanor stayed in his house. At first, Denis wanted her to leave, but seeing her situation, he changed his mind.
He took control of the business that Denis inherited from his mother.
Not trusting Eleanor, Denis decided to play it safe. He hired a private company to install hidden surveillance cameras in the house. On the day he took Elya shopping, the house was undergoing its final maintenance work.
Periodically, Denis looked through the records. He did not see anything suspicious: Eleanor behaved naturally, as if she was not hiding anything. When she asked how she was doing, Elya answered simply:
— I’m crazy about Denis. This is my first true love. I’d like to be happy with him and give birth to these babies… But he’s still cold to me.
My friend only advised me to be patient:
– If he feels good in bed with you, the rest will come with time.
– So you chose him… out of desperation?
– That’s right. But I never wished your mother ill. And he never promised me anything.
Denis thought about it. The situation was starting to become clear.
– Okay. For the sake of the children, we must formally register the marriage.
“I don’t care,” Eleanor answered softly.
“I can’t imagine my life without you.”
– Just don’t tell me you love me. I won’t believe you anyway.
So Denis married Eleanor. Not out of passion, not out of romance, but so that the children would be born in a legal marriage.
Over time, everything changed. Eleanor gave birth to twins – a girl and a boy. For the first time in his life, Denis held his children in his arms and realized that he was ready to build a family anew for them.
That night, when the children were sleeping, Denis lay down next to his wife and said for the first time:
– Elka… I’ve loved you for a long time. I just didn’t want to admit it to myself before.
She smiled, closing her eyes.
– I felt it. And I can’t imagine life without you anymore.
