The real reason Meghan Markle was ‘asked to stay away’ from the late Queen’s d3athbed by King Charles

The ritual surrounding the passing of the Queen and subsequent official funeral had been methodically planned for decades.

Codenamed ‘Operation London Bridge’, it featured a large document outlining every possible outcome of her death.

And, while Prince Harry and Meghan Markle opted to leave the Royal Family at the start of 2020, they, too, had planned for the somber occasion.

According to a royal book, the pair had always planned to see the Queen on her deathbed jointly.

However, when the Queen di:ed unexpectedly at Balmoral Castle in Scotland on September 8, 2022, only Harry traveled to be with his family.

Although he and Meghan were already in the UK for charity events, the Duchess of Sussex did not travel to Scotland.

This was not always the objective. A representative for the Sussexes stated at the time that the couple would travel to see the Queen together, but Meghan was later removed owing to an unclear ‘changing of plans’.

According to reports, then-Prince Charles asked Meghan to stay away so Harry could visit his grandmother alone, with the understanding that Kate would do the same.

However, a recent biography of King Charles claims that Kate was not asked to stay at home, as traditionally supposed, but decided to do so instead.

According to respected Daily Mail journalist Robert Hardman’s book Charles III: New King, New Court, The Inside Story, Kate decided to stay in England to assist her three children when they began attending a new school.

Kate is said to have wanted to stay behind with her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, on the first day of school at Lambrook.

Her decision was then apparently used as a pretext, which, by chance, helped calm Prince Harry down when he learned Meghan was not allowed at Balmoral.

After all, Charles believed the Queen still had days, not hours, to live, and he wanted the royals to focus on their final goodbyes rather than petty infighting.

According to the book published in 2024, he only wanted Meghan to stay away to avoid family conflict.

Charles had personally called both of his sons, asking them to go to Scotland as quickly as possible to say their final goodbyes.

In his biography Spare, Harry stated that learning Kate would not be going seemed to quickly ease him down.
