Typically, routers operate in the background without anyone noticing. However, they occasionally need some care and attention, just like the majority of the items in our home. Rebooting your router is necessary in this situation.
Here’s what to know about your router, and why it’s a good idea to schedule a regular restart.
Advantages of Frequent Router Restarts
According to Jacob Kalvo, co-founder and CEO of Live Proxies, there are numerous benefits to regularly rebooting your router. These are the main ones.
It updates security and software.
Rebooting your router guarantees that it gets regular firmware, software, and patch updates from the manufacturer. These updates are necessary to maintain the device’s functionality and protect it from prospective hackers.
“Watching your device’s security patches and making sure they’re up to date is really important,” says Marcello Barros, global director at Hacker Rangers.
It Can Resolve Issues with Connections
Issues like dropped connections and sluggish speeds can also be resolved by rebooting the router. Kalvo explains, “It’s just a way to reboot the entire network to get rid of those little glitches that might accumulate in it over time.”
It Clears the Cache
The cache, a group of temporary files in the router’s memory, will be cleared when you restart your router. In general, this will improve the seed and performance of your internet connection.
How Frequently Should Your Router Be Rebooted?
Every month or so, or whenever you see a decrease in speed or other connectivity problems, you should restart your router to preserve security and performance.
However, Kalvo notes that the frequency may vary depending on your usage patterns and the router’s dependability. “More frequent reboots may help maintain a consistently smooth network experience for users or businesses with high internet demands.”
How to Turn Your Router Back on
- Turn off the router’s power button, if it has one, or unplug the power line;
- After 30 to 60 seconds, plug it back in.
- According to Kalvo, “this short pause will completely clear the router’s memory.”
- It can take a few minutes for the router to completely restart.
You can restart certain routers by pressing the reset button. But don’t confuse this with the factory reset option, which removes all of your settings, advises Kalvo.
