The Princess of Wales cringed after her adored father’s foot-in-mouth encounter with a tennis player.
The Royal Family is a big admirer of Wimbledon, and Kate Middleton, in particular, is frequently seen in the royal box on Centre Court watching a match.
Sue Barker, the announcer who has been at the heart of Wimbledon for nearly thirty years, is linked with strawberries and cream.’
She has interviewed many of the greats and has numerous stories to relate about the tennis stars, celebrities who come to watch the iconic game, and even the Royal Family.
Sue produced Our Wimbledon, a BBC documentary, in 2017.
She interviewed many famous people for the show, including Prince William and Kate Middleton, who is well-known for her love of tennis.
Kate opened up to Sue and told her about a humiliating incident with her father that she fondly recalls.
The royal had attended Wimbledon with her father, Michael Middleton, who got two very famous tennis players mixed up.
Sue Barker wrote: “During the filming of my Our Wimbledon documentary, I interviewed both the Duke of Kent and Catherine, now Princess of Wales.
“Catherine was so lovely to talk to too. I waited in a room in Kensington Palace with producer Carl Doran and the camera crew.
“We were all a bit on edge and then in she came and put us all at ease, even saying she was a bit nervous as she hadn’t given many interviews. (I’m sure she said that to make me feel better.)“
“She was a natural in front of the camera and what came across in the interview was her obvious love for the game from an early age.
“Tennis is a family passion and the Middletons came to queue and watch Wimbledon most years.”
She then recounted the embarrassing experience with Sue.
“She told me how mortified she was when her father once mistook Tim Henman for Pete Sampras.”
Whoops!
“My father will not appreciate this, but we were strolling past Tim Henman after watching Sampras play. And dad answered, coolly, “Hi Pete.” ‘I was mortified,’ she joked.
That’s not the only awkward event for the Middletons; Kate’s sister Pippa was denied admission to the royal box for breaching a guideline.
Pippa and her mother, Carole, arrived fashionably late at Wimbledon in 2017.
They had arrived intending to join Kate in the VIP seats to see Andy Murray and Benoit Paire’s final, but it appears that being late is frowned upon in tennis.
Pippa and Carole were forced to sit in regular seats behind the box since they arrived late.
Another embarrassing occurrence occurred last year, when Pippa was mistakenly blanked by a Wimbledon winner.
