While the public fallout between Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and the royal family has made countless headlines, few realize that the tension actually began well before the couple stepped back from their royal roles.
In his memoir Spare, Harry disclosed that his strained relationship with Prince William and Kate Middleton was already taking shape long before his 2018 marriage to Meghan.
The once-celebrated “Fab Four” reportedly held a private discussion shortly after Harry and Meghan’s honeymoon, hoping to ease rising tensions. Instead of reconciliation, however, the meeting reportedly devolved into a heated disagreement.
A Private Tea with Unexpected Tension
According to Harry, William, and Kate invited the Sussexes were invited to Adelaide Cottage for a casual tea. But the mood quickly soured when Meghan addressed the growing discomfort between the couple.
Harry wrote that Kate suspected Meghan of trying to use her social connections to access fashion circles.
The situation became more awkward when William and Kate expressed frustration over not receiving Easter gifts from Harry and Meghan.
Harry recounted his confusion, saying, “Easter presents? Was that a tradition? Willy and I never exchanged Easter gifts. Sure, Pa [King Charles] loved to celebrate Easter, but that was his thing.”
He added that he and Meghan apologized for the apparent oversight.
Resurfacing Old Grievances
The meeting took another uncomfortable turn when Kate brought up an older issue: Meghan had once commented on Kate’s postpartum hormones following the birth of Prince Louis.
Kate said this was inappropriate, given that they weren’t close enough to discuss such personal matters. Meghan responded by explaining that it was simply how she talked with her female friends.
Tensions escalated. Harry remembered how Kate clutched the leather arm of her chair so tightly that her knuckles turned white.
William stepped in to defend Kate, telling Meghan, “That’s rude. It’s not how things are done here in Britain.” Meghan snapped back, “Please take your finger out of my face.”
A Fragile Peace
Despite the confrontation, the meeting reportedly ended on a more civil note, with a hug.
Yet, the underlying issues were far from resolved.
Reflecting on it later, Harry wrote, “Was this really what it had come to? Arguments over place settings and hormones?”
He added that Meghan reassured Kate she never intended to hurt her, and simply asked that if something ever did upset her, she should feel free to speak up directly.
Lingering Tensions
In a recent interview with the BBC, Harry admitted that his family might never forgive him, particularly following the revelations in Spare.
