Prince Harry has come under fire for allegedly taking a subtle jab at Kate Middleton in his memoir Spare.
Released in January 2023, the Duke of Sussex’s book offers an inside look into his experiences within the royal family. Throughout the memoir, Harry shares personal accounts involving his brother Prince William, their father King Charles III, and his stepmother, Queen Camilla.
Among the more explosive revelations is Harry’s claim that Prince William physically attacked him after calling Meghan Markle “difficult,” “ru.de,” and “abra.sive.”
He also recounts a tense moment between Meghan and Kate before his 2018 wedding at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. According to the book, Meghan allegedly remarked that Kate must have “baby brain” after forgetting something minor, prompting Kate to snap, “You talked about my hormones. We are not close enough for you to talk about my hormones!”
Readers were stunned by many of the memoir’s claims, but one section in particular sparked backlash for what appeared to be a thinly veiled insult aimed at Kate.
Kate suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum (HG)—a severe form of morning sickness—during all three of her pregnancies. However, when Harry describes Meghan’s pregnancy in the book, some interpreted his remarks as insensitive, or even dismissive, of Kate’s struggles.
He wrote, “Days later, the pregnancy was announced publicly. The papers reported that Meg was battling fatigue and dizzy spells and couldn’t hold any food down, especially in the mornings, all of which was untrue. She was tired, but otherwise a dynamo. Indeed, she felt lucky not to be suffering severe morning sickness, since we were embarking on a hugely demanding tour.”
Readers quickly reacted on social media, interpreting the comment as a subtle swipe.
One Reddit user remarked, “‘No morning sickness’—definitely a dig at Princess Catherine, who struggled with severe symptoms during her pregnancies. Of course, Meg is described as a dynamo.”
Another added, “It feels dismissive to anyone who’s suffered from morning sickness, especially hyperemesis gravidarum like Catherine had.”
HG is a medical condition marked by extreme nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, often requiring medical attention. Kate herself spoke candidly about her experience on Giovanna Fletcher’s Happy Mum, Happy Baby podcast, saying, “I got very bad morning sickness, so I’m not the happiest of pregnant people. It was definitely a challenge—not just for me, but for those around me. Pregnancy and caring for a newborn really affect the whole family.”
While Harry’s comments may not have been intentionally critical, the contrast between how he described Meghan’s pregnancy and Kate’s public struggle has led some royal watchers to believe it was a pointed comparison.
