Prince William could make major decision about Meghan Markle when he becomes king, according to royal insider

Prince William may have the authority to make a significant decision regarding Meghan Markle’s use of her royal title once he ascends to the throne.

As the current heir to King Charles III, Prince William is expected to take the crown following his father. Meanwhile, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back from their roles as senior working royals in 2020, choosing to become financially independent and relocate to Montecito, California, with their children, Archie (5) and Lilibet (3).

Since then, the couple has signed high-profile deals with streaming giants like Spotify and Netflix, according to The Times.

At the time of their royal exit, it was agreed—reportedly with the late Queen Elizabeth II’s blessing—that Harry and Meghan would retain their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) titles but would not use them in any official capacity. This agreement was reflected on the royal family’s official website in late 2023 when Prince Harry’s HRH style was removed.

A statement clarified, “With the Queen’s blessing, the Sussexes will continue to maintain their private patronages and associations. While they can no longer formally represent The Queen, the Sussexes have made clear that everything they do will continue to uphold the values of Her Majesty. The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family.”

This arrangement essentially barred them from using HRH titles in any commercial ventures.

For example, Meghan is billed as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” in her Netflix projects, rather than using her HRH style.

However, controversy resurfaced this week after Meghan appeared to breach this agreement. On an episode of The Jamie Kern Lima Podcast, a monogrammed note was shown attached to a gift basket from Meghan. The note read, “With the compliments of HRH the Duchess of Sussex,” suggesting she had used the HRH title despite the existing agreement.

Critics quickly noticed the title’s use, prompting the couple’s representatives to clarify to Hello! magazine that they “do not use” their HRH styles, even though they still legally retain them.

The incident has sparked speculation that Prince William might take a firmer stance on the matter when he becomes king.

A source told the Daily Beast, “Charles might be happy to put up with this, but William won’t.”

On the other hand, a separate source defended Meghan, stating, “Harry and Meghan retain their HRH titles; however, by agreement, they do not use them for commercial purposes. While they do not publicly use ‘HRH’, this was a personal gift, and their titles remain.”

The debate over title usage underscores ongoing tensions between the Sussexes and the rest of the Royal Family, and how future leadership might approach these unresolved issues.
