Royal watchers have been left buzzing after a video of King Charles III playing an unusual musical instrument went viral, and everyone seems to be saying the same thing.
The King has long been connected to the world of classical music, serving as a patron to prestigious organizations such as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Royal College of Music, and the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music.
In addition to being an accomplished cellist, the 76-year-old monarch also has experience playing the trumpet and keyboard. According to The Express, King Charles made his orchestra debut at just 15 years old — an experience he later described as “extraordinary.” He once confessed, “I loved playing in the orchestra at Trinity [College Cambridge] — albeit rather badly.”
Now, after surprising fans with an unexpected musical performance, King Charles has added “vegetable instrumentalist” to his list of talents.
Earlier this week, the King hosted 350 guests at Windsor Castle, welcoming leaders of community music groups and music initiatives. Buckingham Palace said the purpose of the event was to “highlight the work of grassroots groups and projects” and “celebrate the vital role music plays in uniting communities and nurturing future musical talent.”
Guests gathered in Windsor’s Waterloo Chamber to enjoy performances by students from the Royal College of Music, the Sing for Freedom Choir, and saxophonist YolanDa Brown.
But the highlight of the evening came when King Charles himself joined the London Vegetable Orchestra for a playful performance.
Taking to the stage, he played a version of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star — not on a traditional instrument, but on a recorder made out of a carrot.
ITV reported that a member of the orchestra told the King the instrument was handmade specifically for him, joking that they “stayed up all night making it.” To which the King humorously replied, “At least I can eat it,” according to Classic FM.
ITV News’ Royal Editor, Chris Ship, was present for the unusual performance and shared his reaction on social media, writing: “Things you never thought you’d see… King Charles playing a carrot at Windsor Castle.”
He added: “He was supporting community music at a reception — but, always up for a laugh, Charles took the vegetable instrument, put it to his mouth, and played a tune (or at least we think he did).”
Social media users reacted with a mix of amusement and affection.
One person wrote: “We used to be a serious country.”
Another commented: “I know it’s silly. They all know it’s silly, but it’s funny and I love it.”
Someone else added: “He’s really lightened up since becoming a grandfather, and I think it’s utterly charming.”
Meanwhile, another user defended the King’s playful moment, saying: “Negative people should relax and drink some carrot juice. Well done, King Charles for having a bit of fun. Life’s too short — ignore the haters.”
